Muscle & Aging, Fish Oil vs Fish, Sugar-Free Risks
Muscle isn’t just for looks — it’s your anti-aging superpower. Fish oil might beat fish, and “sugar-free” sweeteners aren’t so sweet for your brain. Plus: the running hack our CTO swears by.

Pinch, punch, first day of the month! 👋 This week: Muscle might be your secret weapon against aging, the hidden risks of "sugar-free" sweeteners, and is fish oil actually healthier than eating fish?
One number:

How much longer you could live by running just 75 minutes per week, according to research in the International Journal of Environmental Research & Public Health [PMC10572212].
🐟 Fish oil supplement better than eating fish?
Rhonda Patrick was recently on Diary of a CEO where she admitted that your Omega 3 supplement might actually be better than eating the whole-food (fish). The reasons she lists? Whole fish often has mercury, microplastics and other nasties in it, while high-quality Omega 3 supplements have been purified [the clip].
Seafood is tricky. There’s no official “organic” label, and farmed fish often eat nasty stuff like chicken poop or cheap canola oil. Wild-caught seafood (like Seatopia) is often your safest bet. If you can’t reliably get clean fish, choose a refrigerated, non-oxidized brand with third-party purity tests (like Gorilla Mind, my personal pick). Most Omega 3 supplements are not purity tested, still contain mercury and can go rancid. Platforms like Labdoor or ConsumerLab are great places to check quality.
💪 Muscle is your secret weapon for aging.
Dr. Vonda Wright (orthopedic surgeon) just dropped a gem on the ZOE podcast: Muscle isn't just about looking good, it’s your body's metabolic engine. More muscle means better blood sugar, higher energy, and avoiding the f for women). But if you ignore muscle to chase weight loss, you’re skating toward a slippery slope of decline [the podcast].
There is such an inherent fear in women that if they eat more protein and lift weights, they will get 'bulky'. If this was the case, every male (including myself) would be looking like Mr Olympia. So, what does significant weight loss or aiming to be super slim actually provide? The skin elasticity of a plastic bag & the bone mineral density of uncooked spaghetti?
Think of muscle as your anti-aging superhero cape: it torches calories, armours your bones, slays inflammation and keeps your brain firing on all cylinders. Skipping the gun show for skinny isn’t brave, it’s just a fast-track to brittle bones. What will you do when you don't have the strength to even carry your 3/4 skim weak latte with half a teaspoon of adaptogenic mushrooms, sprinkled with activated charcoal & a drop of NAD+?
🍭Common sugar substitute shown to impair brain cells
That "healthy" sweetener in your diet soda might mess with your brain. A lab study found erythritol, the sugar substitute in many zero-calorie drinks, damages brain blood vessel cells, increasing stroke risk factors. It's early research (cells, not people), but maybe "sugar-free" isn't as harmless as it sounds [the study].
Glucose itself isn’t inherently harmful—it’s an essential fuel. But excess drives insulin resistance and inflammation. Most artificial sweeteners have been linked to disruptions in gut bacteria, impaired blood sugar control, and even potential brain-toxicity. Erythritol, once considered a safe replacement, has been shown to make platelets stickier and increase markers linked to blood clots, while also damaging the cells that line blood vessels at levels found in a single sweetened drink. Allulose appears metabolically neutral, and early lab and animal studies suggest it may help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce abdominal fat.
“Our take” is a quick, off-the-cuff perspective on the health trends catching our eye this week. It might be a personal anecdote, a gut-check, or a philosophical lens. It’s not medical advice, just our two cents. Read with nuance.
Superpowered by you: Run tall.
Last weekend, the Superpower engineering team tackled the San Francisco Half Marathon. I asked our CTO, Kevin Unkrich, for his favorite running hack:
“I picture my spine as a needle—straight and strong—with my body as a cotton ball, soft and relaxed around it. Sure, it sounds silly, but it genuinely helps me run tall and loose, reducing unnecessary tension.”
Kevin’s style is inspired by the ChiRunning technique. And technique matters more than you might think. One study found that running form alone makes up nearly a third (31%) of your season’s best performance [the study].

Have a fantastic weekend.
